Design and evaluation of balance biomechanic markers with Universidad Manuela Beltrán

COMMONS, in collaboration with Universidad Manuela Beltrán physiotherapy program,is working to design and validate a set of biomechanic markers able to characterize the effects of neurodegenerative diseases on balance function. The project first phase involves digital acquisition of balance measures using the UMB Digital Biomechanic laboratory in Cajicá and the RGB-D capture system developed at Universidad Central. People leading this project include physiotherapy and engineering professionals with valuable experience on computer-aided physical rehabilitation.

Master thesis defense: cost-effective stabilometry with Kinect

A neural network regression model able to estimate the Center-of-Gravity of a subject during static balance, from the joint positions provided by Kinect RGB-D camera, was developed as a cost-effective solution to obtain stabilometry measures and support physical rehabilitation procedures. The model was trained and validated using the COG data provided by the MovyLab motion analysis laboratory at Hospital Universitario de San José with a good performance. Workshop on Engineering Applications (WEA 2017)

The work titled: "Postural control assessment in Multiple Sclerosis by Diffusion Analysis on Kinect Skeleton data" was presented at WEA 2017. The work describes the use of diffusion analysis techniques on stabilometry trajectories obtained from Multiple Sclerosis patients using Kinect skeleton tracking. The obtained results shows that diffusion coefficients obtained from Kinect data are good-enough to detect balance impairment.
